Foundation Phase

Grade R

In Grade R, we believe in providing a happy, caring, and stimulating environment where learners can grow, explore, and develop a love for learning.

We follow the CAPS curriculum and focus on developing learners through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning experiences to ensure a successful transition to formal schooling.

Children learn best when they are actively involved. Through enjoyable play, physical activities, creative tasks, and guided instruction, learners develop essential motor skills. As they are introduced to new concepts, they develop curiosity, self-confidence, and independence while discovering the world around them.

Our experienced and dedicated educators create a warm, safe, and welcoming classroom where every learner feels valued and supported. We encourage positive relationships, mutual respect, and the development of a healthy self-esteem.

In Grade R, we lay the foundation for future academic success. Through structured learning experiences and play, learners develop the confidence and skills needed to make a successful transition to Grade 1.

We invite children to become part of our learning environment where they are encouraged to dream, discover, and grow. Together, we foster a love for learning through play!

We take a holistic approach to development by focusing on:

- Language and communication skills

- Fine and gross motor development

- Problem-solving and critical-thinking skills

- Personal responsibility and independence

- Concrete learning of mathematical concepts

- Social and emotional development

- Creativity and imagination

Intermediate Phase

(Grades 4–6)

The Intermediate Phase is the educational stage spanning Grade 4 to Grade 6. It bridges early childhood education and higher academic learning, guiding learners as they grow into more independent, confident and responsible individuals. This important phase lays the foundation for lifelong learning by developing essential academic, social and emotional skills.

At Bellpark Primary, we believe that every child is unique and has the potential to grow and succeed. Our dedicated teachers create a positive, supportive and stimulating learning environment where learners are encouraged to explore, ask questions, think creatively and develop a true love for learning.

The Intermediate Phase curriculum focuses on building strong foundations in Languages, Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology, Social Sciences and Life Skills. Through engaging lessons, practical activities, collaboration and problem-solving opportunities, our learners develop critical thinking skills and curiosity about the world around them.

During these important years, learners become more independent, develop organisational skills and learn to take responsibility for their own learning journey. We encourage perseverance, respect, kindness, teamwork and leadership, while helping learners discover their individual strengths and talents.

At Bellpark Primary, we value holistic development. We strive to nurture not only academic excellence, but also emotional wellbeing, creativity, confidence and strong values. Our passionate teachers understand the unique needs of learners in this phase and are committed to guiding, supporting and celebrating every learner.

In the Intermediate Phase learners are prepared for future challenges and opportunities. At Bellpark Primary, we aim to inspire curious minds, build character and equip our learners with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to reach their full potential.

Graad 7

Grade 7 marks the beginning of a learner’s high school career, as it marks the start of the Senior Phase of a learner’s school career. The Grade 7 CAPS curriculum provides a balanced foundation for learners’ academic and personal development. It promotes important skills such as literacy, numeracy, critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity. The variety of subjects exposes learners to different fields of knowledge and helps them to become responsible, informed and independent individuals. The curriculum also prepares learners for the challenges of the Senior Phase (Grades 7-9) and further studies.

The Grade 7 year consists of 9 compulsory subjects:

- English Home Language

- Mathematics

- Social Sciences consisting of Geography and History

- Economic and Management Sciences

- Creative Arts (Visual Arts and Performing Arts)

- Afrikaans Eerste Addisionele Taal

- Natural Sciences (Formerly part of NST in grades 4-6)

- Technology (Formerly part of NST in grades 4-6)

- Life Orientation (Formerly PSW in grades 4-6)

Robotics

We introduced the Coding and Robotics programme at Bellpark Primary School in 2023 for our Grade R learners to expose them to the basic concepts and skills of the subject. The aim was to develop logical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and creativity from an early age.

In 2025, we further invested in the programme by establishing a brand-new, fully equipped Coding and Robotics classroom. The facility is equipped with 20 computers, 20 tablets, and 40 Makerzoid robotics kits, providing learners with practical and interactive learning experiences.

The Grade R classes receive a Coding and Robotics lesson every Friday, presented by an external service provider. Learners from Grades 1 to 7 attend a weekly Coding and Robotics period during which a variety of technology-related skills are taught.

Our programme is currently focused on building a strong foundation. During Term 1, learners focused on building robots and developing basic engineering skills. In Term 2, the focus shifts to coding and programming the robots. During Term 3, these skills are integrated, enabling learners to both build and program their robots. In Term 4, we aim to conclude the year with simple projects that allow learners to apply the skills they have developed throughout the year.

Our current focus is on preparing all learners at an age-appropriate and grade-appropriate level while systematically developing the necessary skills. We aim to implement the full Western Cape Education Department (WCED) Coding and Robotics curriculum by 2028.

In addition to Coding and Robotics, learners are also exposed to essential computer literacy skills. Our goal is for Grade 7 learners to leave Bellpark Primary School by 2028 with a solid practical understanding of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint, equipping them to enter high school and the digital world with confidence.
